U.S. Dry Bean Flours Debut at Anufood Brazil
May 6, 2022It’s been three years since USDBC participated in the Anufood expo in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Anufood is part of the Anuga suite of trade shows and is the main food show for South America. This past April, USDBC returned to Anufood but with a different twist. In response to a wave of interest in plant proteins and ingredients, particularly in the Brazilian marketplace, USDBC’s booth and delegation promoted only bean flours. U.S. dry beans struggle to compete with local production and Argentine beans in the Brazilian market. Flours represent a new lane to establish a foothold in this compelling, health-conscious, and bean consuming marketplace. The Brazilian food industry had little, if any, awareness of or experience with bean flour, and how it can be customized for a wide variety of nutritional foods, drinks, snacks, or baked goods. Many visitors to the USDBC Anufood booth were interested in learning more about these products and how to use them in value-added foods. USDBC’s Brazilian representative is planning to follow up on contacts and will develop an ingredients-focused work plan for Brazil in 2023, in addition to ongoing dry bean promotional activities. We would like to thank USDA/FAS Agricultural Trade Office Sao Paulo for their support.
