Alubia beans, Northern Growing Zone
Every year, USDBC tracks Argentina’s dry bean production in the three distinct growing zones, Northern, Southern and Central. This year has been a challenging planting season in Northern Argentina, disrupted by dry spells that forced farmers to stop plantings through mid March. Some of the lots that were planted right before the dry conditions settled in needed to be replanted or lost a great number of plants from the stand. There is a significant difference in the state of the fields that were planted on time and those that were planted late because of insufficient moisture content on the soil. Similar to last year, there is a large proportion of land was planted late or was re-planted. Those lots are developing well, but are threatened by early frosts.
USDBC estimates to date indicate a decrease in exportable supply of black and cranberry beans and a large increase exportable supply of Alubias. Stocks of all bean classes, except blacks are gone and exporters contacted for this report stated that demand is slow, compared with the beginning of May. Argentina’s 2019/20 marketing year runs from June through May. From June 2019 through April 2020, the country exported 450,114 MT of dry beans, up 28% from the same period the previous MY (351,303 MT). Please see the full Argentina Harvest report on our members only site for production details. We will issue a final report next month.
