Latest News On Argentine Dry Bean Market Dynamics
June 19, 2019On May 15, USBDC Regional Representative for the Americas, Alejandro Leloir, attended the Argentine Pulse Chamber’s (CLERA) annual technical marketing conference in Salta, Argentina. The event brings together nearly 400 members of the pulse industry to discuss production, marketing, policy and trade issues. Attendees included the main dry bean producers and exporters, Government agricultural authorities, technical specialists, input suppliers, researchers, students and associated industry representatives. One of the biggest developments in the Argentine dry bean industry is the recent government declaration exempting dry beans from export taxes. The motivation for this initiative may be primarily political in the run up to Argentine elections and we are still unsure what impact this will have on our competitiveness. Other issues discussed include trade discussions between China and Argentina, the healthy Brazilian bean crop, lower maximum residue levels (MRLs) on imports to the EU, lack of certified seed, and weather challenges in dry bean country.

Following the conference, USDBC’s Regional Representative conducted an initial scoping visit in preparation for the Argentine dry bean crop survey. We anticipate that report will be available shortly. For more information or to read the full trip report on CLERA, visit our members only web page.
