The 2016 Mexico Bean Congress drew close to 200 attendees to Cancun, Mexico including almost 65 importers and 50 exporters, looking to do business. In addition to the general session, the Congress featured almost 350 one to one business meetings. This year’s Congress was particularly important given its unique focus on two factors; the celebration of the International Year of Pulses (IYOP) and analyzing the Mexican bean harvest numbers and potential demand. Congress participants heard spring/summer and fall/winter crop overviews from Mexican regional officials along with updates and videos celebrating different dry bean and pulse events as part of IYOP.

Dry bean market dynamics in Mexico are continuing to evolve this year with some of the principal bean growing regions reporting significant crop shortfalls due to weather complications. Mexican officials speaking at the Congress emphasized that Mexico will continue to be in the market for U.S. origin dry beans. USDBC Mexico will continue to monitor and report on the changing market dynamics.
